On Monday morning, April 26th, 1784, a Nun lay dying in an obscure convent
in
Cork City, Ireland. This was Sister Mary of St. John of God - better known
as
Nano Nagle.
Less
than a week had elapsed since she had taken to her bed, weakened and
exhausted. Up till then, every child in Cork had known her as a second
mother.
When the
priest had anointed her, she begged him to look after the children when
she had
gone, and while she spoke her eyes became aglow as they always did when
she
spoke of children.
Her
Sisters in Religion gathered around her and begged a parting word of
advice.
"Spend
yourselves for the poor",
came the feeble voice, and "Love one
another as you
have hitherto done".
The
sacrifices and efforts made by Nano Nagle inpired many like her to continue
the
work which she had started. Today, we can see that her call has been most
evidently manifested in the network of convents all over Ireland, and,
indeed
throughout the world which have been established to "light the
Lantern" in
their respective communities.
These convents are now listed here under their associated Provincialate together
with contact telephone numbers and addresses.
